Frequently Asked Questions

What is HIXNY?
HIXNY - Healthcare Information Exchange of New York - is an important new tool for physicians. It lets them see test results, medications, and other clinical information they need to treat patients. We encourage patients to make their information accessible through HIXNY, which will help doctors give better care. The secure online network is faster than previous ways of sharing information, it reduces the chance of medical mistakes and it should help to lower healthcare costs over time.

How does HIXNY work?
HIXNY is a way for your medical team to share information through a secure, online information exchange. It is being created by local doctors, hospital systems, health plans, and other healthcare providers. Patients will be given the option to participate in the exchange. They will be asked to sign a consent form similar to the common HIPAA privacy forms, except the RHIO form only needs to be signed one time. Authorized medical personnel can log-in to the network and access the clinical information they need more quickly and easily than before.

Who created HIXNY?
The Healthcare Information Exchange of New York (HIXNY) was jointly created by the Iroquois Healthcare Alliance (IHA) on behalf of their 59 hospitals and the New York Health Plan Association (HPA) representing 30 health plans statewide, to promote collaboration among providers and payers.

The primary mission of HIXNY is to reduce health care costs and promote high quality clinical care. HIXNY will achieve this dual mission by providing a technology infrastructure and services to enable physicians, hospitals and other health care providers and insurers to interact, share information resources, and conduct business using a standardized, HIPAA compliant approach to administrative transactions.

Why would I join HIXNY?
It will help your doctor in a routine office visit, and in an emergency situation. If you are part of HIXNY, emergency room doctors will have access to test results, allergies and medication history that could save your life. It will also reduce the risk of mistakes or drug interactions, reduce the number of repeated tests, and make it easier for you to get second opinions.

Who has access to the information shared through HIXNY?
Only authorized medical professionals who see your information now will have access to HIXNY, including primary care physicians, specialists, pharmacists, and the health insurer that processes your claims.

These providers are already sharing this information through paper files, faxes and telephone calls. HIXNY will make this sharing process faster, more efficient and more secure.

How are you addressing privacy concerns?
HIXNY is protected by the most advanced information security available. Its processes are reviewed by privacy officers, whose jobs is to safeguard patient information. HIXNY is more secure than sharing records in paper form. The records are only available to authorized users, and unlike paper files, HIXNY tracks every viewer who accesses information.
